Environment variables and secrets
Per-application environment variables and secrets.
Environment variables belong to one application and are passed to it as literal values.
Working with variables
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Set | Adds or changes one or more variables. |
| Get or show | Reads values. |
| List keys | Shows variable names without values. |
| Import | Adds variables in bulk. |
| Unset | Removes variables. |
Changes take effect on the running service after a restart or redeploy. When you set or unset, you can choose whether Runtime restarts the application.
Secrets
Mark sensitive values, such as DATABASE_URL or SESSION_SECRET, as secrets so they are masked when displayed.
Variables are application data
Runtime does not interpret your variables. A variable that names a cloud provider or contains credentials for one is treated as your application's data, not as a build or infrastructure setting.
