Ongoings and Runtime
How background work differs from continuous application hosting.
Comparison
| Runtime | Ongoings | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs | Services that are always on and accept requests | Work that starts, finishes and is recorded |
| Triggered by | Incoming HTTP traffic | Your code, events, schedules |
| Success means | The service stays healthy | Each run completes, with its result recorded |
| On failure | Health checks, restart, rollback | Retries and failure inspection; dead letters are planned |
Ongoings does not host continuous services. Runtime does not run scheduled or one-off jobs.
Using both
A common pattern: your web app runs on Runtime and hands slow work, such as sending emails or processing uploads, to Ongoings instead of doing it during the request.
